Zone 2 heart rate formula โ€” the 180-age method vs lab test

Zone 2 training is the foundation of endurance. But how do you find your zone 2 max heart rate without a lab? I tested both methods.

Lab test (ventilatory threshold): My zone 2 max was 132 bpm at 42. The lab uses expired gas analysis to find the exact point where CO2 production increases.

180-age formula: 180 - 42 = 138 bpm. That's 6 bpm too high. At 138 bpm, I was above VT1, meaning I was in zone 3, not zone 2. The formula overestimates for most people.

The talk test: At 132 bpm, I could recite 4-5 words between breaths. At 138 bpm, I could only say 2 words. This is the best free method. If you can't speak in complete sentences, you're over zone 2.

My recommendation: Use the talk test to calibrate the 180-age formula. Subtract 5-10 bpm from the formula result. Your zone 2 is the heart rate where you can have a conversation, not just answer questions.
