BMI said overweight, body fat said otherwise — the muscle mass gap

By Dr. Sarah Kim · 2 min read

Client Mark, 34, 6'0", 185 lbs. BMI 26.8 — "overweight" by CDC standards. But body fat calipers showed 18% — normal range. Mark lifts 4x/week, has significant muscle mass. BMI doesn't account for muscle vs fat. I switched to tracking body fat % instead. Mark's goal: 15% body fat, not a specific weight.

If you lift weights regularly, BMI is a poor health indicator. Use body fat % or waist circumference instead. BMI was designed for population studies, not individual athletes.
