What Is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screening tool that estimates body fat using just your weight and height. It categorizes adults into weight ranges that may indicate health risks.
The formula: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)
BMI Categories
| BMI Range | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal weight |
| 25 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 or higher | Obese |
What BMI Doesn't Tell You
BMI can't tell muscle from fat. A bodybuilder might score "overweight" despite having very little body fat. It also doesn't capture where fat is stored — belly fat matters more than hip fat for health risk.
For a fuller picture, pair BMI with:
- Body fat percentage — measures actual fat mass
- TDEE — your daily calorie burn
When to See a Doctor
If your BMI is outside the normal range, or if you're unsure about your results, talk to a healthcare provider. They can consider your full health picture. This calculator is for informational purposes only — it's not medical advice.
